Child of the ocean
I am
feet shod in swirls of
green weed and sand
My spirit rises and falls
to its rhythm
bows in sympathy
with the trees that bend
to the ocean wind
My footsteps
capture a wave
foamy sea pools
in this impression of me
until another rush is made to reclaim it
We have no peace in us today
the sea and I
The gulls bicker
over candy wrappers
and brittle crab shells
the cracked remains
long empty
I echo their unsatisfied cries
I launch my soul in a bottle
with a grain of salt
and a grain of sand

It is amazing how the sea can both give one peace or be defiant.
I have often thought of it as a metaphor for life after death. Large, vast, unknown, and infinite (at least when you look across it) Re: Re: Shore Lines

Have you ever noticed that the ocean changes to fit your mood? Or do we fit our mood to the mood of the sea? I often wonder.

deep indeed. like the ocean.
It changes with the wind, but it is still governed by the laws of God and nature. Kind of like the cycles of human behavior and even God...changes with the season but is reliably stable and dominant so that one can almost predict what it will do. the waves will recede the waves will advance. Setting analysis aside for once, Ned, reading this was just a completely uplifting experience. Wonderful, lyrical writing, so deft and delicate. One to keep, if I may.

Thank you Ken. I don't know if it could withstand much analysis, it was really only a feeling. Just the feelings that I had to write.

I don't like to disagree with you, Ned, but there really are some lovely and intriguing lines in the poem. What about "We have no peace in us today/ the sea and I", or "I echo their unsatisfied cries" or "I launch my soul in a bottle/with a grain of salt/and a grain of sand". There's more than a little to think about here, if you ask me, and it all adds to the quality of the poem.

Ken,
I appreciate your comment and what I appreciate most I think is that you liked some of the lines that I liked best myself. They were ones that spoke to me so I am glad they spoke to you too. Re: Shore Lines

I launch my soul in a bottle
with a grain of salt and a grain of sand I feel that profoundly. Re: Re: Shore Lines

I think if anyone asked me which lines would you most identify with Liz, I would have chosen those.
I identify with them too. Re: Shore Lines

I, too, particularly like the lines mentioned above by ME Strauss. It is very effective the way you used space to talk about yourself, centering "I am" and "the sea and I." I chose the name "Green-Eyed Lady" for my original blog, older than the "Writing one", because of the lyrics to that Song by Sugarloaf. "Green-Eyed Lady/ocean lady.... I'm also reminded of "Time in a Bottle" when I see your bottle reference that is so often used with sea or shore talk, but you do so in a unique manner. See, your poem brings out the music in me! Thx :)

Glenni,
I didn't know they grew porpoises in groves, I thought they raised them on porpoise farms. Dif you know that dolphins have no porpoise in life? They do everything for the halibut. Re: Shore Lines

Lovely poem. You drew me in with feet shod in swirls and pulled me out the other end when you tossed the bottle away.
I also enjoyed your porpoiseful humor. moose http://findmeabluebird.blogspot.com Re: Re: Shore Lines

moose,
I am unwillingly late in replying, for the first time in a year I was kept from my blog for an extended period. Thank you for your kind comment. The sea always draws me in. |
